Description
This seven-day program is designed to prepare individuals with little-to-no experience as floorhands to work safely on an oil or gas well drilling rig. Its intent is to provide a foundation of knowledge and skills so that the student can develop as an effective member of a drilling crew.
The course curriculum consists of classroom lectures, skills training practice and drilling rig practice sessions. The classroom portion covers various systems and components of the drilling rig. Students are given the opportunity to evaluate their knowledge of each section on a daily basis. Safety is stressed throughout.
During the shop portion of the course, practice sessions on spinning chain and on the safe and efficient handling of tongs are provided so that students can be evaluated on their ability to use the equipment in a safe and efficient manner. The drilling rig portion of the program focuses on applying the knowledge learned in the classroom and shop to a drilling rig. The emphasis is on teamwork, proper equipment handling, safety and safe methods of operation.
Upon successful completion, each graduate will be issued a Floorhand certificate. Students are also given WHMIS and the H
2S Alive program, which provides a basic knowledge of H
2S and its hazards, along with practice exercises using self-contained breathing apparatus.
